Police: Convenience store lottery rip-offs 'widespread'

ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Prosecutors say clerks caught secretly scratching off a small portion of lottery tickets to find winning ones is a widespread problem in Georgia.

The owner and a clerk of an Albany convenience store pleaded guilty to selling fraudulent lottery tickets in their store Monday, and police said they will be looking for it in other places.

Georgia Lottery Corporation officials said in a statement: "All lottery tickets have security measures that would indicate that a ticket has been tampered with or 'secretly scratched' by a retailer to look for winning tickets."

Authorities promised to prosecute stores that scam customers.
