ATLANTA, GA (WALB) - Republican Senator Greg Kirk of Americus was appointed to the Senate Natural Resources and Environment Committee for the 2016 Legislative Session. He will also serve as the vice-chair of the Senate State and Local Government Operations Committee and as a member of several other influential Senate committees.
"We are fortunate to live in a state where we have so many natural resources available, but it is crucial to our economic and environmental success that we manage them correctly," said Senator Kirk. "Our state's water supply is likely to be one of the most important issues we will be tackling during the upcoming session. It is an incredible honor to be appointed to this committee, and I look forward to working alongside my colleagues to ensure we are utilizing our resources to the best of our ability."
Kirk will also serve as a member on the Senate Agricultural and Consumer Affairs and Health and Human Services Committees. "The Georgia State Senate's top priority is preserving Georgia's reputation as a leading state for business development, job creation and educational opportunity. I look forward to working directly with Senate leadership in order to find real solutions for Georgia's most significant and pressing issues," said Lt. Governor Cagle.
Once a piece of legislation is introduced in the Senate, it is assigned to a Committee, depending on its topic. If the Committee gives the legislation a "do pass" recommendation, then the proposed law is sent to the Rules Committee for consideration. The appointed chairs will oversee the operation and order of Senate committee meetings, including calling for action on bills, resolutions or other matters assigned to that committee.
The second session of the 153rd Georgia General Assembly will convene January 11, 2016, at the Georgia State Capitol.
