ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Chehaw's outgoing Executive Director says the park has a bright future.

Doug Porter is retiring after leading Chehaw for more than 11 years.
During that time, Chehaw separated from the city in 2006 becoming its own agency with its own employees.
Porter says those changes help with fundraisers and grants.
He says the park has a great staff to keep Chehaw moving forward.

"To operate the park like a business and our staff they get that they understand that this is a small business,” said Doug Porter. “We need to do what we can to generate revenue. Creating new sources of revenue. We just started our catering department. We do wedding planning.”

Porter says his most memorable moment was the unveiling of the African Veldt Exhibit.
Current Parks Operations Director Don Meeks will take over as Executive Director January 1st.
