Couple too high to pick up baby

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

An Albany mother and father are accused of abandoning their child at a daycare center, while apparently intoxicated.

James Ward, Junior and Ayanah Francis were arrested Monday and charged with first degree cruelty to a child, reckless conduct, and drug possession.

Investigators say their 22-month-old son was not picked up at Sister-Sister Learning Center Monday.  After two hours, Deputies went on a wellness check to the parents' home and found the couple apparently intoxicated, with drugs around.

"On the way to the child's bedroom they observed marijuana on an 'Elmo' book in the kitchen, on the kitchen table, which would have been in reach of a child that age," said Dougherty Co. Sheriff's Captain Craig Dodd.

Both Ward and Francis remain in jail.  D-FACS took custody of the child.
