PELHAM, GA (WALB) - A Pelham convenience store employee says he was assaulted behind the store and struck with a gun.
Petro Service Station manager B J Patel says he was scared to come into work this morning because of what happened last night. Just before 11:00 Monday night, Patel says his employee was cleaning up before closing, breaking down cardboard from deliveries.
"While on the side of the building, he was approached by an unknown subject, he had some dirt thrown in his face," said Detective Rod Williams.
Patel says his employee was approached from behind, and hit with a weapon in his right eye. "Last night, I saw blood in the parking lot. This morning I saw blood too," said BJ Patel.
The employee says he is alright. Long-time customer Willie Garden says he was leaving the store just in time to see the aftermath. "He came out running, he fell in the parking lot, I turned around and came back in and told JoJo 'you need to call the police. Somebody's jumping this boy around here.'"
The employee says the attacker went through his pockets, but didn't take anything. Assistant Chief Rod Williams says they see an uptick in crimes during the holiday season and says the department will assist if businesses need extra patrolling during closing time.
"We'll be glad to send an escort to stand by and assist," Williams said.
The victim said the assailant was wearing dark clothing and a hoodie. If you have any information, call the Pelham Police Department.
