Chehaw chief will retire

J. Douglas Porter, Executive Director of the Chehaw Park Authority, has announced his retirement from that post.

In a letter to WALB's Jim Wallace, Porter said, "After more than 11 years as Executive Director of the Park, I have decided it is time for me to retire.

I have been proud to direct the operation of our community’s premier public park & nature preserve that includes one of Georgia’s two accredited zoos, and I am thankful for a great staff, a solid board, and an incredible team of hundreds of volunteers. I am confident that I am stepping down at a time when the Park has a good working relationship with the City and is, I believe, in a great position for the future.

My wife and I plan to remain a part of the community for the foreseeable future as she continues in her job with the Dougherty County School System. As for me, I expect to take a little time off then do what so many active people do in retirement – stay busier than when I was “working”.

Thank you for your support over the years.
