ALBANY, GA (WALB) - The Winter special Olympic games kicked off at the Albany State Friday.
Nearly 500 adults and students from Dougherty County competed in basketball games and basketball skill contests.
Westover High School won the best banner contest.
ROTC students from Monroe and dancers from Deerfield Windsor also took part in the opening ceremony.
Organizers say the event isn't possible without help from the community.
"We just appreciate the community's support," said Russ Allen, who is the Special Olympics chair for Dougherty Co. "We had a really successful fundraiser that ran throughout the fair. We raised about $8,500 from help from the community. This is what that money goes to is putting on events like this."
Athletes also faced-off in a bowling tournament at the All-American Fun Park.
The special Olympic games will be hosted by Deerfield in the spring.
