Firefighters warn to pay attention and prevent holiday cooking fires

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

With families coming together for Thanksgiving meals, firefighters say they expect a busy holiday with many cooking fires.

Albany firefighters say cooking fires are the number one source of residential fires, and they can be deadly.

Firefighters say the large family gathering can distract you from your cooking, and cause a tragedy instead of a celebration.

Albany Fire Department Investigator Sam Harris said "Whether you are frying a turkey or baking a turkey, or anything else, it's always imperative to pay attention to any heat source."
Firefighters say cooks should keep a spoon or oven mitt in their hands.  This will remind them if they leave the kitchen, there's food on the stove.

And make sure you have a working smoke detector in your home, to have a safe Thanksgiving.
