ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Wounded veterans are being celebrated in south Georgia for their service to our country.

The first annual wounded veterans SOWEGA hunt will go through Saturday.

The heroes gathered Thursday evening at Backwoods Outdoors to meet each other. They will be camping out at Kamp Kirksey Thursday.

"I was kind of in a bad place, because I didn't have that drive, that purpose, that mission anymore. after coming over here and being able to compete in these events, it's given me that purpose and showed me that with my injuries that I'm still able to do bigger and better things," said Greg Quarles with the Ft. Benning Transition Battalion.

"He was shot and blown up a couple different times, and he's had numerous surgeries as most of these guys have. I've had 13 surgeries in 3 and a half years. Something like this where they can come out and just relax, and take a break from all of the doctors, and all of the crap that goes on every day with them," explained Organizer Jessie White.

The hunt starts at dawn on Friday.
