DOUGHERTY CO., GA (WALB) -

The first results came in from the Georgia Milestones, the state's new assessment system for students from 3rd grade through high school.

In Dougherty County, Lake Park and Lincoln Elementary schools as well as Merry Acres and Robert Cross Middle Schools outperformed the region and the state in some areas.

Albany, Dougherty, and Westover High Schools tested at or above the state average in the "Developing Learning" Category.

The school superintendent says they were prepared for the worst due to the extreme rigor of the testing, but now they know where they need to improve.

"We've got to do a better job teaching youngsters to read early on by the third grade. Reading and math are really the basics that everything else starts from," said Dr. David Mosely the Dougherty County Superintendent.

The new State results showed a lower level of student proficiency than was seen with the old testing.

The State Superintendent says that just means students and teachers are now being asked to clear a higher bar.
