Special needs teens go for gold in Thomas County.

THOMASVILLE, GA (WALB) -

The Thomasville YMCA hosted their Winter Special Olympic Games today. The athletes have been training to make sure they were whipped into shape and ready to compete.

CEO of Thomasville YMCA, Tom Everett said, "Its a special day that they really anticipate and look forward to so there's a lot of training that goes on and practice time to be able to perform today."

Special needs teens from high schools around South Georgia played in a basketball tournament and if they can think of a perfect way to describe today it would be, "Very exciting, very exciting, real exciting!" said Nick Casey a Thomas County Central High School Alumni.

Thomas County Central High School won first place and now the teammates will take their competitive skills a step further to go for the gold metal in Atlanta.

"We gotta be better than them, so we're trying to rep Thomasville and South Georgia so we're trying to tell them that South Georgia can beat them also, so good luck North Georgia," said special Olympic athlete Derrick Edwards.
