ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

A winner was drawn today at Southside Middle School for a  raffle that helped an Albany student win a car and supported the local Special Olympics.

The winner of the raffle presented by the Exceptional Students program took home a 2009 Mercury that was donated by the DoCo Federal Credit Union.

With the help from student's and faculty, the raffle raised nearly $6,000 that will help fund the Special Olympics in town. Organizers say it's an important event for the athletes.

"It's important to know that these athletes have a place to compete & they're able to do so & just really compete against each other & excel, that's what we want them to do. And have a good time doing that," said Russ Allen, the chair of the Special Olympics Dougherty Board.

The Winter Games take place on December 4th at Albany State University.
