Terrell County organizations fight to be a healthier community

Terrell County are taking an aggressive approach to address the health problems going on in their community.
It's an event where everybody in the community can have fun.

"We really just wanted to have a fun day to encourage the residents in the community," Kimberly Scott with the Cancer Coalition said.

But it's also one that is the start of tackling a larger problem in the community.

"Unfortunately Terrell suffers from many health disparities," Scott said.

Margaret Halbrook is here today because she wants to decrease the amount of people in Terrell County living with health issues such as cancer.

"We definitely want to see a decrease in some of those negative numbers for the community," Margaret Halbrook said.

According to organizers Terrell County ranks high in Georgia when it comes to cancer.
Halbrook says that recently she lost some one to cancer.

"My mother-in-law, who was a resident here, she died a few years ago of cancer," Halbrook said.

That's why today is the  the first of many steps to help the community get healthy.

"This is a kick off as apart of a strategic plan where several organizations join together to try to address and tackle some of those issues," Scott said.

A step which Halbrook says is in the right direction.

"I just love this community, you know. So I think that anything that I can do to help make it even better, that's important to me," Halbrook said.

Right now leaders are coming together to plan their next move. If you would like to join the efforts call the Cancer Coalition at (229)312-1700.
