TIFTON, GA (WALB) - Julie Smith has called Tifton home since 1975.
She has been a student, wife, mother, real estate agent, council member, and grandmother here. Now, she'll be the first woman to serve as Tifton's mayor.
"That's an incredible honor," said the mayor-elect. "But it's really about this community and what leadership can do and how we can carry this community forward."
Smith currently represents District 4 on the city council, and she helped found Advantage Realty in 2007, two years before the market crashed.
"So many people came up ans said, 'Why did you open a real estate company now and how are y'all going to make it.' And we realized if we took care of the people," reminisced Smith. "Then the company and the business will take care of itself. That's sort of what I want to translate over into this position."
Smith believes the transition will be smooth with the support from her coworkers and family.
"(They) encourage me, and challenge me and knock me down when I need knocking down a little bit. And humbling a little bit. And lift me up when times get tough, so I'm very thankful for them."
Smith is adamant about government through the people. She believes more people need to get involved in improving their community.
"I've always been involved in community my family raised me, and I hope I've raised my children to give back. Tifton has been so good to me and my family."
And now Smith is excited to give back more as mayor.
"When we saw the numbers last night, of course I was thrilled. But I'm also incredibly humbled. Because what those numbers say is that the people of Tifton and Tift county have put their trust and their faith in me. and that's incredibly humbling."
