Valdosta mayor re-elected

VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -

John Gayle will serve a second terms as Valdosta's mayor.

He held off challenge from former Fire Chief J.D. Rice

Brooks Bivins was a distant third.

Several people were at the Lowndes County Board of Elections headquarters Tuesday night to watch the votes get tallied up.

Rice took an early lead before Mayor Gayle pulled out the victory.

Gayle said, "I'm feeling relieved more than anything. It's been a tight race and it's been seven political forums that we had to go through and I knew it was going to be tight. I was just hoping that my supporters would show up and they did."

Mayor Gayle added that he's looking forward to getting a new waste water treatment plant online.

He has decided this will be his final term in office.
