Valdosta State student pronounced dead after fatal wreck

LOWNDES CO., GA (WALB) -

A VSU student from Omega lost his life on Sunday morning after a three car wreck.

GSP responded to the accident at 2:49 a.m. on I-75 southbound in Lowndes County.

Officials said that the student, 22-year-old Geraldo Vargas, was driving south on I-75 in the right lane. Vargas veered off the shoulder of the roadway, striking an unoccupied and broken down Mercury Villager in the outer emergency lane.

After Vargas struck the Villager in the rear, his car was left disabled when it rolled into the middle lane facing westward. A semi-tractor trailer, operated by 43-year-old Marcus Menyfield, was traveling south on I-75 in the middle lane. Vargas' car was then struck on the passenger side with the front end of the semi.

Vargas was transported to South Georgia Medical Center, where he later died of his injuries.

No injuries were reported from Menyfield. Airbags did deploy in Vargas' car, but he was unrestrained at the time of the collision.

Troopers do not suspect any drug or alcohol use, but will be pending on a toxicology report. Troopers suspect that Vargas possibly fell asleep at the wheel, causing him to travel off the roadway.

The middle and right lanes of I-75 were closed until approximately 4 a.m. due to debris in the roadway. No charges will be filed in the collision.
