CAMILLA, GA (WALB) - After several months of construction, a new store is now open in Camilla. Marvin's Hardware celebrated its grand opening Friday, bringing 20 jobs to the area.
With development in Camilla still on the rise, the addition is just the beginning of more economic expansion in to Mitchell County.
The building used to house an old Walmart. Economic Development Director Paige Gilchrist and his team spent four years, trying to fill the vacant space.
Hibbett Sports will be located next to Marvin's Hardware. It's scheduled to open in November, bringing more than 5 jobs to the area.
"I think that we're just business friendly and we're out recruiting looking for people to come to make our community grow," said Gilchrist.
The next community goal is to fill the old Winn-Dixie building that's been vacant for three years.
Crews are also continuing to work on the area's Taco Bell, which is scheduled to open before the end of the year. Gilchrist said she's proud of the progress the city is making and hopes larger employers will come and make their mark in the community.
"We're just excited that all these businesses will be open just in time for Christmas and people can shop here locally," said Gilchrist.
Gilchrist will be meeting with retailers in Atlanta who are looking at available spaces and properties in Mitchell County.
