Dougherty County Sheriff steps up scam warnings to seniors

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

The Dougherty County Sheriff says he is concerned by the number of senior citizens being targeted by scammers, and he is stepping up efforts to warn them.

Dougherty County Sheriff Kevin Sproul said several senior citizens have lost money to scammers in recent months. Sproul said the number of these scam calls and schemes seem to be increasing, and that the crooks are using more improved technology that many older people don't understand.

"The criminal element is getting into our computer systems and through our phone systems," said Sproul.  "And they are attacking our senior citizens.  So we are all having to work more diligently in that area, to prevent that from happening in the future."

Sheriff Sproul said that in the coming months he will be speaking to several senior citizen groups at churches and civic groups, to teach them to avoid scams.
