LEESBURG, GA (WALB) - The Lee County Sheriff's Office says that Michael Egler and Leslie Egler have been arrested for cattle rustling, and they are looking for Ricky McConnell. They are all facing charges of stealing calves from Oak Hill Dairy in Lee County.
Two weeks ago, WALB reported that calves, about four weeks old, weighing about 100 pounds were stolen without a trace from the dairy. In the last three months 17 calves have been stolen, and ten were taken in one night.
Oak Hill Dairy Manager Marty Erickson said "This is gigantic. Because this is our future. In two years these guys are up there milking. Very large problem for us."
Oak Hill Dairy is raising hundreds of these calves, which can't live away from the farm. "If you don't know what you are doing with these calves, they are more likely to die than live," Erickson said.
Oak Hill officials say they are afraid the calves are being taken for their meat, rather than being sold to other producers.
