VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) - The Valdosta Police Department has a new chaplain program.
Valdosta Police Chief Brian Childress and Valdosta Mayor John Gayle unveiled the new program Wednesday.
Five Valdosta pastors will be available to help officers deal with stress or anger and help strengthen communication between the community and the police department.
"We are the direct line of defense for citizens," said Pastor Darren Neal. "They will speak to us before they'll speak to a police officer. Sometimes, we're that bridge that can help filter what needs to be said and what does not need to be said."
The chaplains will also be available to ride along with officers at the officers' request.
