VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) - The Valdosta Police Department is trying to warn people about a phone scam that is going around.
The department has received several calls recently from residents reporting having gotten a call from someone claiming to be with Georgia Power.
According to the police department, the caller tells the residents that they have to wire money to an account to pay off the balance on their bill or their electricity will be shut off. The police department says if you get one of these calls, do not send any money.
"If you don't pay your bills, you're not going to get a phone call. If you don't pay your Georgia Power bill, they send you notices that it's due," said Valdosta Police Department Lt. Kari Williams.
Lt. Williams said some residents have already been scammed out of money. If you receive one of these calls or you believe you are the victim of a scam, call your local police department or sheriff's office immediately.
