Large crowd expected for "Pops in the Park" in Valdosta

VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -

An annual music festival to benefit Valdosta State University was set to get underway at 6 p.m. Thursday in Valdosta.

A steel drum band and a jazz ensemble from VSU, along with a few musicians, will play music until 8 Thursday night at the fine arts amphitheater behind the VSU fine arts building at the corner of Brookwood and Oak Streets.

The proceeds will help fund scholarships for students studying music at VSU.

"The student scholarships for the music department because it helps us recruit higher caliber students to the university, lets us be competitive with other regional schools and draw in a higher talent base," explained VSU Music Department Head Doug Farwell.

Tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for students, seniors, and military members, and kids under 12 get in free.
