ALBANY, GA (WALB) - One man was confirmed dead after a fire at Windover Apartments on West Gordon Ave. on Saturday.
Albany Fire Department arrived at the scene after receiving a call around 5:35 a.m. Firefighters had to fight their way into the apartment building right from the staircase because of heavy flames.
Joshua Bateman, 27, was found dead in a bedroom on a second floor unit. Dougherty County Coroner Michael Fowler says it appears that Bateman was trying to escape.
"Possibly he had gotten up already because he was not in the bed. He was away from the bed possibly had been smelling the smoke and trying to get away," Michael Fowler said.
Officials say it's possible the fire started in the kitchen of the apartment Bateman was in
"The unit that had the heavy fire damage is where we are looking right now. And it's also where the unfortunately, the occupant did parish," Fire Chief Ron Rowe said.
Two out of four of the units were occupied. The Red Cross is working with one family that lost everything to the damage.
Investigation continues as Albany police and firefighters are at the scene.
