ELLAVILLE, GA (WALB) - Schley County officials said more than a dozen inmates were injured after a van they were traveling in collided with a semi truck.
It happened at the intersection of GA 26 and U.S. 19 after 1 p.m. Friday.
Georgia State Patrol said all of the inmates, from Stewart County, were taken to the hospital for treatment, along with the bus driver. There were a total of 18 inmates on board.
The highway was closed at the intersection. It was expected to reopen by about 5:30 p.m.
Schley County Sheriff Shane Tondee said the crash happened when a semi truck was turning left onto U.S. 19 N. when it hit a concrete truck.
The impact sent the truck into the bus carrying the inmates, which was stopped at a stop sign at the intersection.
There was no immediate word on the severity of their injuries.
Officials said the bus was traveling to a private prison in Lumpkin, GA.
