DOUGHERTY CO., GA (WALB) - A K-9 Marine at MCLB earns a prestigious national award. MCLB officials say Pablo is one of a kind and that he's committed to doing his job of protecting others.
Meet Pablo, he's a 9-year-old Belgian Malinois Military Working Dog and the 2015 American Kennel Club Dog of the Year for the Canine Excellence Uniform Division.
"I've had him about three years and he's just a great working dog, great companion, very sociable," said Greg Madrid, Military Working Dog Handler.
Madrid's wife nominated Pablo for the award. He's been with the Marine Corps Logistics Base in Albany for five years and is classified as an active Marine.
"We actually received him from Camp LeJeune, they had an extra dog and we needed one," said Madrid.
Pablo went through extensive training in San Antonio, Texas to provide protection for leaders such as President Barack Obama.
"He was able to protect President Obama, along with the Clintons, also many dignitaries here locally," said Madrid.
He also does VIP sweeps at Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains to protect President Jimmy Carter while he teaches Sunday school.
"Explosive support, you will sweep vehicles or buildings or packages, whatever they need us to check," said Madrid.
Pablo has also saved the lives of many troops during his two tours in Afghanistan by finding multiple explosive devices.
"He is your all around perfect dog," said Madrid.
Madrid says Pablo's 80 pound frame may look intimidating, but that he's very popular with kids.
"He's a very big Teddy Bear, but he does know how to turn it on whenever it is time to go to work," said Madrid.
Greg Madrid and Pablo will go to Orlando in December to receive his award.
