Americus bus driver teaches life lessons

A Sumter County school bus driver is using a competition to encourage good behavior on her bus. Cynthia Wright names three students every month who show the best behavior, and she gives each of them a gift when they win. It's her way of reaching out to her community.

She's been driving Sumter County students to and from school for 29 years. Her rules are simple. Keep the bus clean, and cooperate with the driver.

"All you have to do, you're not on the bus no more than an hour, an hour and 15 minutes the longest the someone is on here, so it's not that bad," said Cynthia Wright.

But she has a new way to promote that good behavior. "They love it."

For the second month, Wright published her "students of the month" in the local paper. And it's been a big hit.

"They're really excited about it and said 'well Mrs. wright I'm going to be really good. I'm going to do this, and I'm going to do that.' And I said ok, it just takes a little effort that's all," said Wright.

After riding with her, it's clear that she runs a tight ship. "Always teaches them how to do their best. And if they put forth an effort, you never know how things can work out," said Wright.

Her goal is simply to show her kids that she cares about them, and she's there for them. But for transportation director Tracy Monts, it's something she wants all of her drivers to do to curb bad behavior.

"On the ones that are doing the rewarding the the kids, we can tell a difference in it," said Monts.

"I'm planning on doing it. We're going to save some of them. We're going to reach some of these kids. And that's my goal is to reach out to them," said Wright.

Something each of these kids is sure to appreciate.

This month the students of the month are Lauryn Carter, Omar Lunu, and Aaliyah Peavy. She says she gives them clothes, candy, and other knick-knacks that kids would like.
