VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) - Christmas is still about two months away, but the Salvation Army in Valdosta is already preparing...and they need your help.
For many families in Lowndes, Berrien, Echols, and Lanier Counties making sure their children have a memorable Christmas is a struggle. Valdosta resident Kesha Scott says that's especially true this year because of the price of electricity.
"Electric has been very, very high in this community and everybody is struggling trying to pay the bills," Scott emphasized.
That's where the Salvation Army's Empty Stocking Fund program comes in. "To raise funds to help purchase toys for those who are less fortunate during the Christmas season," said Valdosta Salvation Army Maj. Robin Starr.
Scott says this program is a blessing and it will give her some more happy memories to record. "I always make sure I camcord Christmas; my kids getting up, opening up gifts," Scott explained.
The Salvation Army is looking for monetary donations as well as donations of toys and clothes for the families in need.
"They can make the donation through the item in the newspaper, they can make a donation here at the Salvation Army," said Maj. Starr.
All of the items donated will be sorted by age and then the parents will get to come through a few days before Christmas and pick out what they need.
Parents can register their children at the Salvation Army office located at 320 Smithland Pl. from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. through October 8th and then again on November 2nd through the 5th.
