Mother charged in baby girl's death

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

The Dougherty District Attorney said the mother of a baby girl has been charged after the child was found dead.

Latasha Mathis was charged with involuntary manslaughter and reckless conduct.

Prosecutors say one month old Niya Robinson tragically died when the mother was sleeping in the same bed with the baby, and rolled onto top of her, smothering her. The mother was criminally charged, because prosecutors say she was drunk.

The 37 year old mother was booked into the jail by the name Latasha Walker, but prosecutors say her name is Latasha Mathis.  Last night Investigators arrested her for involuntary manslaughter and reckless conduct.

District Attorney Greg Edwards  says the baby was found dead Saturday at this home in the 900 block of Riley Street Saturday, starting an investigation by the Child Death Team, leading to her arrest last night.

"The child died as a result of the mother being intoxicated, and causing the child's death.  That's the allegation that we will be building off this particular matter."

The Coroner is still awaiting toxicology results from the baby's autopsy from the GBI Crime Lab.

Walker was released from the Dougherty County jail this afternoon on three thousand dollars bond.
