ALBANY, GA (WALB) - A cemetery that hardly anyone could recognize near Albany State has been cleaned up.
The African American Historical Society, Ilogic, Union Missionary Baptist Church and Boy Scout Troop eight all came together to clean up the old African American cemetery.
Volunteers came out to Pones Cemetery to clean off grave stones and the brush around it.
The African American Historical Society said that they plan to contact relatives of the dead and also honor those who they can not identify.
"Our ancestors are buried here, so the thing to do is to bring it back to where it needs to be. For whatever reason it got to this state our energy is bringing it where it needs to be," Michael Harper said.
The group hopes they can continue to keep the cemetery clean.
