ALBANY, GA (WALB) - City leaders marked the beginning of Domestic Violence Awareness Month by releasing butterflies.
October 1 marks the beginning of the awareness month.
Representatives from various agencies attended the event, and released the butterflies in front of the Albany Government Center.
Experts say 109 people died from domestic violence incidents last year.
"It has to be society. We have to make some changes," said Liberty House Executive Director Silke Deely. "And change the way we think about women and people in general. This is a human issue, not just a women's problem."
A moment of silence was also held for the victim's of domestic violence.
