PLAINS, GA (WALB) - Folks say attendance at the annual Peanut Festival over the weekend hit an all-time high. Around 6,000 people watched the parade and visited President Carter's hometown.
Organizers say it provides a big economic boom for the entire area. Jimmy Carter's recent cancer announcement is believed to have made a huge impact in the attendance.
"Everybody was just thrilled to get to get a glimpse of President Carter. The people that came to his book signing, they were thrilled to get to get to see him up close and personal and get a quick photo," said Jill Stuckey.
President Carter briefly addressed the crowd Saturday---giving visitors some background on Georgia peanuts.
