VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) - An early morning Valdosta building fire remained under investigation late Monday morning.
When firefighters got to 111 Florida Ave. around 1:45 a.m. Monday, they saw heavy smoke and flames coming from the building.
Firefighters had difficulty putting out the fire because the building was collapsing, preventing them from going in and putting out hot spots. The fire department estimates that roughly 70% of the building was damaged by the fire.
"There was no electricity to the structure. So, we possibly think it may have been vagrants because there [were] vagrants in the area," said Valdosta Fire Marshal Cpt. James Clinkscales.
Cpt. Clinkscales also said that the fire department was still working late Monday morning to clear debris from the collapse so that they could determine if the building is safe to be turned over to the property owner.
