HOMERVILLE, GA (WALB) - The Clinch County Board of Elections dismissed a complaint Thursday challenging a Homerville city councilman's right to run for re-election, but he's not completely in the clear.
The board decided at a meeting Thursday morning to open its own investigation into Councilman James Witherspoon's residency.
A civil rights activist filed a complaint alleging that Witherspoon doesn't live in Homerville because he has homestead tax exemptions on residences in Lowndes County and in Florida.
The county's attorney asked Witherspoon turn over the last six months worth of bills for those properties by Tuesday. WALB reached out to the county's attorney and to Councilman Witherspoon for comment, but neither returned our call.
