AMERICUS, GA (WALB) - Cleanup continues two days after an apartment complex in Americus was flooded. Many of those residents are planning to move back in sometime tonight.
A massive pile of furniture has accumulated here over the last couple days. Many things in these first six units were ruined, but they're still thankful it wasn't worse.
The owner has spent the last two days assessing the damage. "I think it's about what I thought. Replacing mainly flooring and getting them dried out. That's just the main thing. Mainly where I've spent money at right this minute is, I had to buy a bunch of fans to put in them to dry them out real good. Things are getting pretty dry. Looking good," said property owner Allen Smith.
To give you an idea about how much water was in these apartments, you can see this line where the water stopped. These apartments had about a foot of water in them.
"First apartment here had carpet, carpet in the bedrooms, and the living room and of course that carpet had to be pulled out and we're putting tile down," said Smith.
Most residents have been out of their apartments since early Tuesday morning when the storm happened. Thankfully Red Cross helped out. "They have put them up at night so they would have somewhere to stay until I could get the apartments ready for them move back into," said Smith.
The non profit also helped them with clothes. Smith is hopeful to finish the flooring in Apartment B today, so he can move on to the last apartment tomorrow. "It doesn't take that long once you get in there and get started," said Smith.
Many of the cars in the complex were also totaled due to the flooding. Smith says this area hasn't flooded like this since the Flood of 1994.
