ALBANY, GA (WALB) - The Albany State University Foundation is stepping up efforts to help students having trouble paying for college.
Just this week, the Foundation handed out $37,000 in need-based scholarships to more than 200 students.
Students who owed $500 or less to the school were eligible.
Foundation officials also looked at the students' grades.
"As a foundation it's just critical that we get assistance and get donations and support to help students," said Chanta Haywood, ASU Foundation Executive Director. "So many students at Albany State find themselves in situations where $500, $800, $700 could mean the difference on whether or not they stay here or leave. They need someone to fill in the gap."
So far this semester, the ASU Foundation has given out $87,000 in scholarships.
