ALBANY, GA (WALB) - East Albany just moved one step closer to getting a public pool.
Tuesday, city commissioners approved hiring an architect to design and provide construction administration services for an aquatic facility near the Thornton Gym.
The money to fund the new pool will be provided by SPLOST 6 that was passed in November of 2010.
Commissioner Jon Howard says it is a project he has been working on for years.
"We want to expedite this to have it open sometime next year before the Spring of the year. Not only [for] kids of East Albany but the community and Dougherty County. They can come in and swim and it's also going to include like a splash park for small kids to participate in some water. It's going to be a great plus to East Albany," said Howard.
The city can use around 99 thousand dollars of SPLOST funds to help pay for the construction of the new pool.
