VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) - Valdosta's public works department is trying to make sure the city is able to continue to attract plays and theatrical performances.
The public works department wants to upgrade all of the technical equipment on the stage at Mathis Auditorium, such as the cables, lights, and fire curtains.
Public Works Director Richard Hardy said that as of Monday there was no timeline for when the city may get a new auditorium, so the city has to spend the money to repair the building and cannot sell it as some have suggested.
"We have to meet the demands of our citizens, our customers, and we have no timeline at present of when we're going to receive this new auditorium," Hardy said. "So, we need to make sure we take care of our customers, our citizens; make sure they have a place, a venue, for these type of activities."
Bids for the work will be voted on at the city's council meeting on Thursday.
