Victim identified in fatal Lowndes Co. deer collision

LOWNDES CO., GA (WALB) - Georgia State Patrol troopers from Post 31 went to the scene of a fatal crash that was caused by a deer, on Old Clyattville Road near Ousley Road in Lowndes County Wednesday morning.

The State Patrol says that a 2012 Subaru Legacy, driven by 40 year old Syreeta Necole Thomas, from Valdosta, was traveling northbound on Old Clyattville Road.

A 1997 Nissan pickup, driven by Clayton Lee Chandler, 49 years old from Hahira was traveling south on Old Clyattville Road. A deer ran into the road from the east shoulder of Old Clyattville Road.

Thomas struck the deer, which went airborne and struck the windshield of Chandler's vehicle, and came out through the rear glass.

Chandler was pronounced deceased on scene from injuries sustained from the crash.  Thomas was not hurt.

Seatbelts were in use in both vehicles and airbags did deploy in Chandler's vehicle.

The road was shut down for approximately two hours. No charges will be filed in this collision.
