Female college basketball player sets fire to ex-girlfriend's apartment

A 19-year-old college basketball player has been charged with arson and burglary after investigators said she set fire to her ex-girlfriend's apartment.

Fire Investigators said A'Chanti Layfield, a freshman guard at Central Georgia Technical College, set fire to an apartment on Blue Water Drive around 7 p.m. Friday and set a pile of clothes on fire outside in the parking lot.

According to a report, Layfield was mad about a breakup with her 17-year-old girlfriend. Officials said she broke into her ex-girlfriend's apartment and set a love letter on fire, along with a teddy bear.

There was little damage, but firefighters say the fire could have been deadly.

That could have gotten away from us and we could have had people injured.  Because the people unfortunately in the other apartments had no idea what was going on.

Layfield has been released from the Dougherty County Jail.

Central Georgia Tech officials did not respond to our questions about Layfield's status at the school.
