VPD investigating possible armed robbery near VSU

VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -

Valdosta Police were trying to figure out Tuesday morning exactly what happened during a possible armed robbery near the Valdosta State University Rec Center.

According to the incident report, officers responded to 811 W. Mary St. around 12:45 a.m. Tuesday after two people reported being robbed at gunpoint.

The incident report states that 29 year old Brandon Ovaert and 34 year old Christopher Tracey told officers they were standing outside at the apartment complex when two men ran up to them with a gun.

Ovaert and Tracey reported having their cell phones, more than $200 in cash, a lighter, and some medication stolen.

According to a press release from VPD regarding the incident, the victim's told officers that the robbery occurred while they were waiting for someone else to arrive so that they could play basketball. But, also according to the release "inconsistencies were discovered during the initial investigation."

Valdosta Police Department Lt. Kari Williams said as of Tuesday afternoon the victims were giving different versions of the event. "We're trying to find out if there's something that we missed or if there's something else to it. At this time, we don't know," Lt. Williams explained.
