VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) - Scintilla Charter Academy celebrated the opening of the first charter school in the Valdosta/Lowndes County area with a ribbon cutting ceremony at 4:00 p.m. on the school's campus, and Governor Nathan Deal was on hand.
Gov. Deal was the keynote speaker and was introduced by South Georgia native and state School Superintendent Richard Woods. "You are going to give [the students] a unique experience that will lay a great educational foundation for their future. That's what every parent should want," said Gov. Deal, explaining why the school is so important to the community.
"After a lot of hard work and many answered prayers it is amazing to see this dream become a reality," said Julie Hiers, Scintilla's principal. "We are looking forward to hosting our community and local and state leaders and can't wait to celebrate our school and scholars."
Just over 400 students are enrolled at Scintilla Charter Academy. "We are at our maximum capacity and could not be more thrilled," said Mandy Avera, Dean of Students and School Support. "We know that our small school environment and enthusiastic teaching staff will make this a successful first year."
The campus is located at 2171 East Park Avenue and the event is open to the public.
