The movie by the Kendrick brothers was expected to hit $5 million in its debut this past weekend. It surpassed expectations and reached over $11 million.
But it is the message behind the film "a call back to prayer" that seems to be resonating with audiences in a big way.
"There's a black church and a white church in another city that left the theater at the same time. They met in the atrium, locked arms, and started praying together and singing together in a movie theater," said War Room Director Alex Kendrick.
Hundreds of theaters are expected to add war room in the coming weeks.
The Kendrick brothers says God has big plans for this movie.
