VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) - The city of Valdosta was preparing Friday for potential heavy rains next week from Tropical Storm Erika.
The city had begun lowering its retention pond. Crews were also going around and making sure drainage ditches and storm drains were not clogged up with debris.
"In addition to having people and equipment ready to deploy, we're also sending out crews to check the catch basins, check drains, and also lowering the mill pond so that we are ready for waters that might come our way," explained Valdosta City PIO Sementha Matthews.
If Tropical Storm Erika does impact Southwest Georgia, it could bring with it heavy rain and high wind.
