VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) - Carpet was being ripped up Tuesday and walls had been marked for demolition inside VSU's University Center.
"It will be like a one stop shop," said VSU Project Manager Alan Sanderson, as he stood in one of the hallways under construction and described what the purpose of the renovation is.
The UC is being converted into the university's new Student Success and Services Center. The building will bring financial aid, centralized advising, the university bursary, and a few other services all under one roof.
"It's an exciting time. We've been planning this for at least a few years," Sanderson pointed out.
Demolition was expected to continue for parts of the inside of the building for another few months as of Tuesday, but in just a couple of weeks the rebuilding process was expected to get underway.
"We'll start building walls, they'll start doing still stud framing, and then the sheet rock and doors and ceilings," Sanderson said as he walked through one of the hallways under construction. "Before they do the ceilings though, there's going to have to be some air duct work that's going to have to be reallocated."
The classrooms that used to be in the U-C are being permanently eliminated to create the new success center, but Sanderson was not concerned, saying there was already enough classroom space throughout the rest of the campus.
"It's going to be transformative in here. It's going to change how departments work and it's going to serve the students better most importantly," Sanderson explained.
As of Tuesday, the whole project was expected to completed in nine months.
