We are glad the Valdosta Board of Education is going to comply with the state's Open Meetings Act when it comes to hiring new employees.
The school system will now publicly announce the people and the positions they are hiring before the board takes their vote.
We are disappointed that in a statement the school board wants to maintain their former policy, thinking is was legal, it is not.
That policy of waiting until the next day to notify the public of new employees is a violation of Georgia's Open Meetings Act.
That's the very reason the state Attorney General's office ask the board to change its policy.
A change that insures the people of Valdosta like citizens across the state will know who is being hired to work for them.
