New body cameras coming for South Georgia agency

AMERICUS, GA (WALB) -

Police officers will be wearing new body cameras by October 1st. The city council approved the purchase of 35 new body cameras so all officers will have one.

The department will undergo training before the cameras are used in the field. Interim police chief Herman Lamar thanks the city council, mayor, and city manager for their commitment to the police officers. 

"It improves citizens relationship because citizens have an opportunity to see that officers are wearing body cameras that are working which lots of times, improves citizens' behavior with the officers," said Interim Chief Lamar. 

Several new cars are also expected to arrive within a few weeks.
