THOMASVILLE, GA (WALB) - Thomasville firefighters are going from business to business, making sure they have the proper fire safety equipment to keep employees and patrons safe.
The city now has 17 newly certified inspectors to cover more businesses in a shorter amount of time.
Fire Marshal Tim Connell said they're looking for functioning exit and emergency lights and up to date fire extinguishers.
The city has already had a commercial fire this year caused by an extension cord.
"Extension cords are not allowed in businesses," said Connell. "The owner didn't know and, unfortunately, he had a fire because of an extension cord. So that's why we feel like we need to go out and just educate."
Connell said each business will be inspected once a year.
