ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Dozens of South Georgia senior citizens are feeling cooler thanks to new air conditioners that the Rotary Club of Dougherty County gave to them.
The SOWEGA Council on Aging has a waiting list of South Georgia seniors living without air conditioners.
"There is a huge need. Seniors especially, frail seniors, are really in need of air conditioning units. And we have an ongoing list," said SOWEGA Council on Aging Development Director Izzie Sadler.
Club members delivered a window air conditioner to 70 year old Eddie Davis. His window unit broke down a couple of weeks earlier.
"I had called last week I think, week before last, and she said she was going to put me on the list. So I appreciate it," said Davis.
Members made this their annual district grant project, buying 28 window units.
"It's obviously hot here in South Georgia, and as a person ages the risk of health problems and death increases from the heat. So we are trying to solve that problem," said Rotary Club of Dougherty County President Bill Sadler.
Eddie Davis says his gift will help him.
"You always going to feel better from the heat," he noted. "You can't sleep well, you know. During the days, it's real miserable."
The SOWEGA Council on Aging is still working to provide air conditioners for senior citizens in need.
