VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) - Last year, the Wildcats season ended early with a first round loss to Newton high. They look to make a deeper run in 2015, which was a tough task with only 3 starters returning on defense.
Valdosta High was forced to practice inside Thursday due to rain. This was fitting because they will start the regular season inside the Georgia Dome on Saturday.
The squad is seeing a heavy turnover on both sides of the ball. They had a strong showing in a 17-7 scrimmage victory over Ware County.
Head coach Rance Gillespie needs the confidence from that win to carry over to the regular season for his inexperienced team.
Gillespie admits that he has some uncertainty with the new faces on both sides of the ball.
"One new guy on either side or on special teams would worry a coach," said Gillespie. "But certainly that's something that is a concern. They're some good players, they just don't have a lot of experience."
He plans to have his wildcats ready for the Corky Kell Kickoff against Norcross High School on Saturday.
