Sylvester Police discovers several counterfeit bills

SYLVESTER, GA (WALB) -

A rash of counterfeit bills have Sylvester police on alert.
So far, police have discovered five bills from different places in Sylvester.. including city hall. It's not very often a counterfeit bill comes through Sylvester City Hall.
"We don't. It happens every once in a while. The last one we had was 2013," says City Clerk Kathy Wise.
City Clerk Kathy Wise has worked with the city for more than 30 years and says they usually only see counterfeit bills during the holidays.
"Yesterday when we went to the bank, we had a 20 dollar bill," says Wise.
Lt. Kenneth Washington says this is a significant problem.
"That's a large amount of counterfeit bills that's been circulated," says Lt. Kenneth Washington, with the Sylvester Police Department.
They also found a counterfeit bill that came from Advance Auto Parts.
Washington says they plan to send the bills off to the GBI crime lab in Moultrie to see if they can find any fingerprints.
"We will be submitting them to the crime lab to get additional evidence such as prints. And also talk to these people to get any available videos because they do have the time that they were passed so we will try to get video from these businesses," says Kenneth.
In the meantime Wise says that's a loss for them and others unless some arrests are made.
"We have no way of knowing when it came in or anything, we can tell the customer you have a 20 dollar bill. We have given them a full payment so we have to take that as a loss," says Wise.
Washington says it's important to check bills with counterfeit pens and report any you find.

Anyone with information can contact the Sylvester Police Department. Lt. Washington says they plan to contact the Secret Service for assistance.
